THE ERC INFORMATION / FAQ PAGE

Who are we? - The Ellenroad Radio Club is the new name for the former Oulderhill ARS/Shawclouch ARC, which operated at the Oulder Hill Community School (and previously Shawfield School) as a Novice Class from 1991, before eventually evolving into a 'proper' radio club. Later we became the Shawcloucgh Amateur Radio & Radio Listeners Club, based at the Rochdale City Learning Centre at Falinge, Rochdale, and from February 2008 we are now located at the Ellenroad Steam Museum, and have adopted the new name to reflect our new identity.

Where are we? - From Monday the 11th of February 2008 we will be based at the Ellneroad Steam Museum in Newhey, Rochdale, Lancashire.

When do we meet? - The meetings are generally held on Monday evenings from 7.30pm throughout much of the year.

Are visitors welcome? - Yes, we certainly welcome visitors, whether you are new to the hobby, visiting the area, or a member of another club you are more than welcome to visit either our regular weekly meetings, or any of the talks and film shows that we often hold. Details of these can be found on the Notice Board page. We are a radio club, so we welcome anyone with an interest in the radio hobby, and this is not exclusively restricted to licenced Amateurs, SWLs and Scanner enthusiasts are welcome too.

Can I study for the Amateur Exams there? - Yes, we can teach Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced courses, and also morse code. We have RSGB registered and approved instructors, and hopefully we will be a registered testing centre again in the near future, where students can take their Foundation and Intermediate Exams. We don't have the facilities to teach large classes though, as courses have to be done during normal club meeting times, for this reason priority is given to club members rather than non-members.

Is there a membership fee or charge? - Yes, we have an annual subscription of £5 per yer, usually payable in January of every year, and there is also a weekly charge of £1.50p for adult members, which is to cover the cost of the room rental etc. This is quite a small charge compared to many other clubs and societies, but we do recognise that for some people this can be very difficult due to personal circumstances, and we wouldn't wish to prevent anyone from joining because of any personal difficulties they may have. If this is the case do let us know and we may be able to make special arrangements for you.

You said that SWLs and Listeners/Scanning enthusiasts are welcome is this true? - Yes, we are more than just an Amateur Radio Club, the majority of our members are also active Shortwave Listeners, and enjoy such things as Scanning, Broadcast Listening, Airband Monitoring, TV/FM Dxing, Utility Radio Monitoring, in fact any aspect of the radio hobby. We welcome members with any of these interests, you don't need to be a licenced Amateur to join us, and you will find plenty of kindred spirits if you are interested in any of the above - a callsign is not required to be an ERC member, just a love of radio!.

How do I contact the club? - Check out our 'Contacts' page, you will find a list of club officers and their contact/e-mail addresses there. Do drop us a line if you have a question about the club you'd like an answer to.

Where is the Ellenroad Steam Museum? - Check out the map below for our location. If travelling by car it couldn't be simpler, we're right next door to Junction 21 on the M62 Motorway. You can find details at Multimap or from the map below:
